Arafat and Sharon Wonder Years Cartoon

My only problem with this one was that I drew Sharon from vague memory and he ended up looking more like the principal from Ferris Bueller's Day Off than anyone else.  However, one of the DTH editors, "The" editor as luck would have it, felt that the word "scrote" did not belong in the DTH.  I was surprised because the word "shit" gets used quite liberally and even the F-word will pop up once in a while in direct quotes.  Apparently, though, it is not okay to reference a word that was used regularly on a sappy ABC sitcom 10 years ago.  They say that the only way to truly have freedom of the press is to buy your own press:  that's why we love the internet.  Incidentally, I think "scrote" was about the only funny thing that came out of The Wonder Years.

The DTH chose to run a professional cartoon by Doug Marlette instead and they ended up getting complaints about that one (see below).  Let that be a lesson to you.

Syndicated Cartoon Run On Monday Is Offensive To Catholic Religion

                       April 04, 2002

                       TO THE EDITOR:

I am writing in response to the syndicated cartoon that was in The Daily Tar Heel on March 31
with the Catholic cardinal speaking to the boy. Speaking as a Catholic and someone who is proud
of that heritage... etc, etc, etc.
