35% Boiled Ham
Matt Purdy 2005

What initially interested me about this subject is that it was cheap.  I purchased it on sale for $1.99/lb.  At the time, I thought I was purchasing boiled ham.  It wasn't until I got home and looked at the label that I realized that it was thirty-five percent boiled ham.  Thirty-five percent boiled ham?  Did this mean that the ham I had just purchased was sixty-five percent not cooked, or sixty-five percent not ham?
I was so confounded by this conundrum that I inquired about it as I was replenishing my supply of cheap-ass ham later that week.  The deli lady said that she kind of remembered being asked that before, but didn't remember what the answer was.  After a moment of focused thought, she said that she was pretty sure it meant that it contained thirty-five percent additives.
So it's thirty-five percent not ham.  According to the deli lady, the additives that make up the thirty-five percent in question consist of, like, salt maybe.
