Scandal at the
Independent Weekly
Last week, I discovered blatant racism within the pages of the extremely liberal Independent Weekly (9.14.2005). The Independent narrowly averted a full-blown scandal by choosing not to print my exposé in their "Backtalk" section. For the people, it is printed here:
| Whites
only
Last week I was reading the Quigmans cartoons on page 100 when my eyeball slipped and began reading the adult services classifieds. I was surprised to see that a newspaper whose pages so often ooze the self-congratulating, self-defeating brand of liberalism would also contain an advertisement offering services for "white men only". That's right, if you want an "exotic encounter" with Pamela and JennaXXX, bring your wallet and your mime make-up because "the hottest barely legal escorts to ever travel the triangle area" do take credit cards, but they don't take anyone who isn't "generous, upscale, and white". Isn't this the same politically-correct newspaper that recently redefined the word asinine by printing the phrase "good ol' person" in place of "good ol' boy"? Today it's adult escorts, tomorrow it will be water fountains and lunch counters. Before we know it, police will be chasing people around town with fire hoses and German Shepherds. I'm sorry, Ger-person Shepherds. And all because of a couple of page-hundred ho's. |
The Independent didn't so much
as acknowledge my letter, but by the time the new issues hit the streets
less than 48 hours later, the word "white" had disappeared in favor of
"generous" with a capital g. That was mighty white of The Independent,
but "generous, upscale professional men only" still seems a bit exclusionary
for a newspaper that likes to beat us over the head with its "progressive"
ideals each week. Apparently those ideals go out the window when
a few advertising dollars are involved.
