If I make an independent film, it will
be called Year of the Monkey. Year of the Monkey will star Steve
Buscemi as a middle-aged man who, struggling to find himself, resolves
to live in a tree or trees for a year. While he is away living
in the tree or trees, Nick Nolte will attempt to steal his wife, who is
confused. It will be a bittersweet tale about love, individuality, and letting go. The film will also include monkeys dressed like people.
This is not related to the film, but there
was a guy we called Monkey freshman year in college because, on one of
our first days in the dorm, he climbed a tree to retrieve a frisbee.
Also, Monkey was a good name for him because he was kind of a doofus who
thought very highly of himself. We called him Monkey not with malice,
but in a matter-of-fact sort of way.
One day late
in second semester, I saw him in the dorm with one of his frat pledge brothers
and I said "Monkeeey" in the form of a greeting.
He seemed
kind of annoyed, I guess because he was with his frat friend, and he said
"dude, do you even know my real name?"
"Herbert Fick,"
I said.
"Amazing!"
he said.
