The other day, I was returning from Burrito Bunker when I spotted a homeless guy with a big, crazy beard sitting on a fire escape. From past encounters, I recognized him as an "aggressive panhandler" and began to brace myself for some surly request for a handout. As I walked past, I heard him clear his surly, homeless-guy throat and, as I was thinking about what a lazy, surly bastard he was, he gathered all his energy and raspily forced out the word "Goesdbuzzzders" (as in who you gonna call). I had been waiting for him to open his mouth to try to take something from me, but he had opened his mouth and given me a chuckle at his own expense. God bless the incoherent drunks.

A Palestinian youth shows a cheering crowd the blood on
his hands after two Israeli soldiers were killed at a Palestinian police
station in Ramallah Oct. 12. (Chris Gerald, AFP) Within 3 days,
Israeli Intelligence had used Italian news footage to identify and arrest
eight Palestinians involved in the police station slaying. The captured
Palestinians were taken to Isreal where they will stand trial for murder.
Upon arrest, the young man pictured at left stated that he was practicing
his cricket swing behind the police station at the time of the murders.
The news footage, he claims, captures him celebrating a particularly well-struck
cricket shot after a hand-chafing morning of practice. The young
man's legal team has cited among Israeli Intelligence Agents a pattern
of racism against young Palestinian men such as their client. His
lead attorney has called the arrest "inexplicable and inexcusable, irrational,
irrelavant, and irregular." He went on to say that he would find
the whole "Israeli chimp-show circus trial" quite amusing were this clearly
innocent man not being held captive against his will.
