The Weak in Review 9/07/99
When the bars let out a few saturdays ago, we saw some jackass
fishtail his Mustang GT on the rain-slickened asphalt of Franklin St.
Police seem to like to hang around near bars at closing time on the weekends, and
the young man was pulled over within half a block of his fishtail.
As we drove past the scene of the traffic stop,Chris (formerly of Van
Dyke Lab) had the presence of mind to combine the situation at hand with
the over-played song on the radio. I think it went a little something
like this:
"He's big
and haaaairy
He wants to
get maaaarried
...and run
away.
Ohhh, I'll do anything you ever dreamed to be released-
you can have
my caaaaaar
I don' wanna
wake up with LaMar."
After (actually it turned out to be during) three days of
rain from Dennis the Storm, I went out to walk around and see how much
water was in the stream down by the dog field. I was amazed by how
strong the urge was to jump into the brown whitewater and go for a brisk
float. If I hadn't seen so many episodes of Rescue 911 featuring
dumbass rednecks hanging from tree branches over swollen rivers, I surely
would have done it. Therein lies the danger of "reality TV".
Fox is robbing us of our young-adulthood with such programs as Rescue 911
and Cops. Not only was I deprived of an exhilerating ride down the
mocha rapids of Dogfield Creek, but, thanks to Fox, I will never feel the
rush of going for a joyride in a stolen sports car while thinking "they'll
never catch this baby in a piece-of-crap Caprice", because I now know that
once the police chopper gets you on the infrared cam there's no hope of
escape. Sure, we all like to kick back and pass a slow friday evening
with a few cold ones and back-to-back episodes of Cops, but at what cost...at
what cost? Fox has stripped our generation of the earnest ignorance
that is the mother of adventure.
Zbig Quote of the Week
"I am trying to talk about science here and you don'
listen. If I talk about food or some crop like this, then you listen."
Eileen Quote of Several Weeks Ago
"Matt is very interested in sandwiches."
Movie Review: The Zero Effect
I picked this one up because it was
slim pickin's at the video store this weekend thanks to Dennis the Storm
and because it said "two thumbs up, way up" on the box. It was a
good simple movie with no special effects, just a decent story. It
was sort of an LA Confidential or Usual Suspects type of movie. It
had some good parts and about a third of the way through, I thought it
was going to be a really good movie, but it fell short of its potential.
It was still well worth seeing, especially if you're tired of the special
effects driven blockbusters.
Movie Review: Lock,
Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
This was the primary movie that I picked up in
a two-for-one rental deal with The Zero Effect, but my roommate's girlfriend
randomly picked 'Zero' (the one in the white case) as the one we should
watch first. I was pleased by this pick because my, and I think everyone
else's, curiosity was piqued by the movie we had never heard of.
Anyway, we didn't have time to watch LS&TSB, but my roommate, who has
also not seen it, says it is supposed to be funny and has Irish people
in it.
